What Affects Your Piano's Tuning?

Even when a piano isn't played regularly, it naturally moves in and out of tune over time. Changes in temperature and humidity affect the piano's soundboard and other wooden components, altering string tension and ultimately affecting pitch and tuning stability.

Regular tuning helps maintain consistent pitch and sound while keeping your piano performing the way it should. Piano manufacturers commonly recommend having a piano tuned approximately twice per year, although the ideal frequency depends on the instrument, its environment and how often it's played.

Regular maintenance also helps preserve the instrument's sound, responsiveness and overall condition, allowing you to enjoy consistent performance for years to come.

Temperature & Humidity
Seasonal changes, heating systems and fluctuations in humidity cause the piano's wooden components to expand and contract, affecting string tension and tuning stability.

Age & Condition
Strings and other components naturally change as a piano ages. Older instruments or pianos that haven't been serviced for some time may require additional adjustment to achieve a stable tuning.

Moving & A New Environment
Moving introduces a piano to a different environment. Once the instrument has had time to acclimatize to its new surroundings, tuning can help bring it back to proper pitch and stability.

Playing & Usage
How frequently and intensely a piano is played can also affect how often it needs attention. Instruments used by professional musicians, teachers or music schools may require more frequent tuning than a piano used occasionally at home.
