Frequently Asked Questions
Piano Moving
Answers to common questions about professional upright, baby grand and grand piano moving throughout British Columbia.
What does a professional piano moving service include?
A professional piano move includes planning the safest route through the property, protecting the piano and surrounding surfaces, using appropriate piano moving equipment, secure transportation and careful placement at the destination. Our piano movers plan each relocation around the type and size of piano, stairs, doorways, property access and travel distance.
What types and brands of pianos do you move?
We move upright, studio, console, baby grand and grand pianos from a wide range of manufacturers, including Yamaha, Kawai, Steinway & Sons, Bösendorfer, Fazioli, Baldwin, Mason & Hamlin, C. Bechstein, Petrof, Schimmel, Young Chang and Samick. Because dimensions and weights vary considerably between piano models, we ask for the manufacturer, piano type, photographs and access information before confirming your piano moving quote.
Do you move upright pianos?
Yes. Upright piano moving is one of our core services. We move upright, studio and console pianos from manufacturers including Yamaha, Kawai, Baldwin, Petrof, Schimmel, Young Chang, Samick and Steinway & Sons, among others. Our upright piano movers use appropriate equipment and protection based on the instrument, stairs, property access and transportation requirements.
Do you move Steinway, Yamaha, Kawai and other grand pianos?
Yes. Our grand piano movers handle baby grand and grand pianos from manufacturers including Steinway & Sons, Yamaha, Kawai, Bösendorfer, Fazioli, Baldwin, Mason & Hamlin, C. Bechstein and other piano makers. Grand piano moving requires specialized preparation, protection and equipment, with the exact moving plan based on the instrument and property access.
Can you move a piano within the same home or building?
Yes. We can relocate upright and grand pianos between rooms or floors within the same home, condominium, business or other property. Even when truck transportation is not required, piano weight, flooring, stairs, corners and doorway clearance need to be considered before the move.
Do you provide long-distance piano moving?
Yes. We provide long-distance piano moving throughout British Columbia, including moves between Greater Vancouver, Vancouver Island and the Sea-to-Sky Corridor. Long-distance piano moves are planned around the instrument, pickup and delivery access, transportation distance and protection required during transit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Pricing & Piano Moving Quotes
How piano moving quotes are prepared and what affects the cost of moving an upright, baby grand or grand piano.
How much does it cost to move a piano?
The cost of professional piano moving depends on the type and size of piano, pickup and delivery locations, stairs, elevators, difficult access, travel distance and any unusual handling requirements. Moving an upright piano with straightforward ground-level access, for example, may have different requirements than moving a baby grand or grand piano involving stairs.
What is included in a piano moving quote?
Your piano moving quote is based on the agreed scope of the move and can include the professional piano moving crew, specialized equipment, protection, transportation and placement of the piano at its destination. Any stairs, difficult access or other known requirements identified beforehand are incorporated into the moving plan.
What information do you need to provide a piano moving quote?
We typically need the pickup and delivery addresses, piano type, manufacturer if known, photographs of the piano and information about stairs, elevators, doorways, parking and other access conditions. For Steinway, Yamaha, Kawai and other baby grand or grand pianos, the model or approximate dimensions can also help us accurately plan the move.
Do stairs affect the cost of moving a piano?
They can. Stairs can change the equipment, crew size and handling requirements of a piano move. When requesting your piano moving quote, tell us how many stairs are involved at both locations and provide photographs whenever possible so we can properly assess the access before moving day.
Are there additional charges if my piano is heavier than expected?
Your quote is based on the piano and access information provided before the move. If the piano type, manufacturer, approximate size and access conditions are accurately disclosed, those requirements can be accounted for in advance. If the actual piano or access conditions differ significantly from the information provided, we will review any necessary changes with you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Piano Types & Access
Moving upright and grand pianos through stairs, elevators, apartments and other challenging access conditions.
Can you move a piano up or down stairs?
Yes. Many upright, baby grand and grand piano moves involving stairs can be completed with the appropriate crew, equipment and planning. Straight staircases, turns, landings and exterior stairs can each present different challenges, so photographs of the complete access route are important when arranging a stair piano move.
Can you move a piano through tight doorways or difficult access?
Often, yes. Our piano movers assess doorway clearance, corners, hallways, staircases and other restrictions before determining the appropriate moving method. Particularly difficult access may require additional equipment, crew members or preparation, which is why photographs of challenging areas are helpful during the quoting process.
Can you move a piano in an apartment or condominium?
Yes. We provide upright and grand piano moving for apartments and condominiums. Elevator dimensions, elevator reservations, loading areas, building rules and parking access should be confirmed before moving day so the piano move can be properly coordinated.
How are baby grand and grand pianos prepared for moving?
Grand and baby grand piano moving generally requires additional preparation compared with upright piano moving. Depending on the instrument, appropriate components are carefully removed and individually protected before the piano is secured to specialized moving equipment for transportation. The instrument is then carefully positioned and set up at its destination.
Can you move high-value Steinway, Bösendorfer and Fazioli pianos?
Yes. High-value grand pianos require particularly careful planning and handling. We can assess Steinway & Sons, Bösendorfer, Fazioli, C. Bechstein, Mason & Hamlin, Yamaha, Kawai and other professional or high-value instruments based on their specific model, dimensions, access conditions and transportation requirements.
How heavy is a piano, and why should I use professional piano movers?
Pianos can weigh several hundred pounds, with larger upright and grand pianos weighing considerably more. Weight is only one challenge. A piano's shape, balance, delicate internal components and concentrated load make proper equipment, protection and piano-moving experience particularly important when navigating stairs, flooring, doorways and transportation.
